Tropical cyclones are classified by sustained wind speed: tropical depression (<63 km/h), tropical storm (63–118 km/h), and typhoon/hurricane/cyclone (>119 km/h). They require sea surface temperatures above 26.5°C and sufficient Coriolis force (typically >5° from the equator). The most destructive aspects are storm surge, extreme rainfall and high winds.
