Surviving Thailand hot season (March-May) — heat tips, best activities and where to cool down

Thailand in April is brutally hot — 38-42°C with high humidity. How to stay safe, what to do, and how Songkran helps you cool down.

How hot does it get?

March through May is Thailand's hot season, and April is consistently the hottest month across the entire country. Bangkok is brutally hot; Chiang Mai and the central plains frequently exceed 40°C. Combined with humidity of 60-70%, the heat index (feels-like temperature) can reach 48-52°C — genuinely dangerous levels. The hot season peaks in mid-April, when the Thai New Year water festival (Songkran, 13-15 April) has everyone enthusiastically throwing water at each other.

Heat safety

Hydrate constantly — drink at least 3-4 litres of water daily. Avoid outdoor activity between 11 AM and 3 PM when UV index reaches 11-12 (extreme). Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, a hat and SPF 30+ sunscreen. If you feel dizzy, confused or stop sweating, seek air-conditioned shelter immediately — these are signs of heat stroke, a medical emergency. Most Thai locals simply avoid being outside during midday — follow their example.

Best activities in the heat

Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning (6-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM). Temples like Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are best visited right at opening time. Spend midday in air-conditioned malls (Thailand has world-class shopping), spas, cooking classes, or museums. Beach destinations (Phuket, Koh Samui) are more bearable than Bangkok because of sea breezes, but UV is still extreme — you can burn in 15 minutes.

Where to escape the heat

Chiang Mai's hill stations (Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep summit) are 5-8°C cooler than the city. Khao Yai National Park offers cool waterfalls and forest shade. Phu Kradueng is a popular highland escape. If you want to stay near Bangkok, the water parks (Siam Amazing Park in Bangkok, Columbia Pictures Aquaverse near Pattaya) are great family options.

Songkran — embrace the splash

Songkran (13-15 April) transforms the unbearable heat into a nationwide water fight. Cities become free-flowing water battles with hoses, water guns and pickup trucks of ice water. Bangkok's Khao San Road and Silom are the epicentres. It is the most fun you can have at 40°C. Practical tips: use a waterproof phone case, carry your passport in a dry bag, wear quick-drying clothes and water shoes. Do NOT drive a motorbike during Songkran — the roads are dangerously slippery.
