Best time to visit Indonesia — Bali, Java, Komodo & beyond
Indonesia spans 5,000 km with varied climates. Our island-by-island guide covers Bali dry season, Java monsoon timing, Komodo best months and Raja Ampat diving seasons.
Overview
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago — 17,000 islands stretching 5,000 kilometres from Sumatra to Papua. The country straddles the equator and has a tropical climate, but the sheer size means that conditions vary enormously between islands. The main question for travellers is not "when is the best time to visit Indonesia?" but "which island am I going to and what is its specific dry season?"
Bali
Best months: May to September (dry season). Bali has one of the clearest wet/dry splits in Indonesia. The dry season from April to October offers reliably sunny weather with low humidity, comfortable temperatures of 27–30°C and calm seas. July and August are peak tourist season — expect crowds and high prices. May, June and September are ideal shoulder months. The wet season (November–March) brings daily afternoon storms and high humidity but is still warm and perfectly swimmable between the showers.
Java
Best months: May to September. Java has a similar dry season to Bali but with higher humidity. Yogyakarta and the cultural heartland are best visited in the dry months. For Bromo and Ijen volcano trekking, June to September offers the clearest skies and coolest temperatures. Jakarta is hot and humid year-round but significantly less rainy from June to October.
Komodo & Flores
Best months: April to September. Komodo National Park is at its best during the long dry season when the islands turn golden-brown and Komodo dragons are easier to spot. Diving visibility peaks in June to September. The wet season (December–February) brings rough seas that can close dive sites and make boat transfers uncomfortable.
Sumatra & Borneo (Kalimantan)
Best months: May to September. Both islands are wet year-round but significantly less so during the dry season. Orangutan trekking in Sumatra and Borneo is possible all year but drier months mean better trail conditions. Beware the haze season (August–October) when peat fires can dramatically reduce air quality in Sumatra, Kalimantan and even Singapore.
Raja Ampat (Papua)
Best months for diving: October to April. Raja Ampat is one of the world's premier dive destinations and has the opposite timing to most of Indonesia — the calmest seas and best visibility are during the wet season (October to April). Manta ray season peaks November to April. June to September brings rougher conditions but fewer tourists.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the cheapest time to visit Bali? ▾
February and March are typically the cheapest months — it's wet season and outside school holidays. May and September are good-value shoulder months with dry weather.
Can you visit Komodo in the wet season? ▾
Yes, but expect rough seas, reduced dive visibility and some boat cancellations. The dry season (April–September) is strongly recommended for Komodo.
Is Indonesian haze a health concern for travellers? ▾
In bad years (El Niño events), smoke from peat and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan can push air quality to hazardous levels across the region, including Singapore and Malaysia. Check air quality indices before booking August–October trips to affected areas.
