Best time to visit the Philippines — typhoon season, dry months and island timing
The Philippines has a complex climate with 4 types. Our guide covers the best months for Manila, Boracay, Palawan, Cebu, Siargao and avoiding typhoons.
Overview
The Philippines has over 7,000 islands and the most complex climate in Southeast Asia. The country officially recognises four climate types based on rainfall distribution. For most travellers, the simplest rule is: visit from December to April for the driest weather and lowest typhoon risk. But island-specific timing matters — Siargao surfing, Boracay beaches and Palawan diving each have optimal windows.
December to February — cool dry season
The amihan (northeast monsoon) brings the most comfortable weather. Temperatures are slightly cooler (28-31°C), humidity is lower and rain is minimal across most of the country. This is peak tourist season for Boracay, Cebu and Palawan. Christmas and New Year are festive but expensive.
March to May — hot dry season
The hottest months. Temperatures in Manila reach 35-37°C with high humidity. Beaches are still excellent — this is prime time for island hopping. April and May are the best months for Palawan diving (visibility peaks). Semana Santa (Holy Week in April) sees heavy domestic travel.
June to November — wet and typhoon season
The habagat (southwest monsoon) brings the main rainy season to western areas. Typhoon frequency peaks in August-September. Manila and Luzon are most affected. However, the eastern Visayas and Siargao have no dry season and surf peaks from August to November. Shoulder months (June, November) offer good value with manageable weather.
Best months by destination
Boracay: November to May. Palawan (El Nido, Coron): November to May, diving best in March-May. Cebu: January to May. Siargao: September to November for surfing (Cloud 9). Banaue rice terraces: April (pre-planting) or October (harvest). Manila: December to February.
