Best time to visit Malaysia — east coast vs west coast guide
Malaysia has opposite monsoon seasons on each coast. Our guide explains when to visit KL, Langkawi, Perhentian Islands, Borneo and the Cameron Highlands.
Overview
Malaysia is a year-round destination, but the two coasts have opposite monsoon seasons. The west coast (KL, Penang, Langkawi) is driest from December to March, while the east coast (Perhentian, Redang, Tioman) is best from April to October. Understanding this split is the key to planning a perfect Malaysian trip.
West coast and Kuala Lumpur
The west coast is sheltered from the northeast monsoon by the Titiwangsa mountain range. December to February is the driest period, making it ideal for city breaks in KL, beach time on Langkawi and food tours in Penang. March to May sees increasing heat and humidity. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings afternoon thunderstorms but mornings are usually clear.
East coast and islands
The east coast faces the South China Sea and bears the full force of the northeast monsoon from November to March. Perhentian, Redang and Tioman islands close to tourists during these months because of rough seas and heavy rain. The best time is April to September with peak conditions in June to August — calm seas, excellent diving visibility and warm sunny weather.
Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak)
East Malaysia on Borneo is wet year-round but drier from March to October. June is the optimal month for climbing Mount Kinabalu. Orangutan watching at Sepilok and Danum Valley is possible all year. The Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival in July is a highlight. Avoid December to February if you want to minimise rain disruption.
Cameron Highlands
The hill station is pleasant year-round with daytime temperatures of 20-22°C. The driest months are January to March and June to August. Tea plantations and strawberry farms are the main draws. Light rain can occur any time, so pack a light jacket regardless of when you visit.
