Best time to visit Vietnam — regional weather guide

Vietnam has three climate zones with different best-visit windows. Our region-by-region guide helps you pick the perfect months for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and more.

Overview

Vietnam is one of the trickiest countries in Southeast Asia to time perfectly because its three climate regions — north, central and south — have different wet seasons. There is no single month that offers perfect weather everywhere. The key is knowing which region you want to prioritise, or being flexible enough to follow the sun from north to south (or vice versa).

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay)

Best months: October to November and March to April. The north has genuine seasons — winters (December–February) are cool, grey and drizzly with temperatures of 12–18°C. Spring (March–April) is warm and increasingly sunny. Summer (May–August) is hot, humid and rainy with frequent thunderstorms. Autumn (October–November) is the sweet spot: warm, dry, golden light and minimal rain. Sapa is best from September to November for clear mountain views and harvested rice terraces.

Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue)

Best months: February to May. The central coast has the most volatile weather in Vietnam — typhoons hit from September to November and flooding in Hue is almost annual. The dry season runs January to August with the driest months being February to May. Summer (June–August) is hot but dry on the coast. Avoid October and November for the central coast unless you want to experience dramatic storm weather.

Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)

Best months: December to March. The south has a simple wet-dry monsoon split. The dry season from December to April offers sunny, hot weather (30–35°C). The wet season from May to November brings daily afternoon downpours but mornings are often clear. Phu Quoc island is best from November to March. The Mekong Delta is most photogenic in the wet season when the waterways are lush and full.

Best months for a full Vietnam trip

March and April offer the best all-round compromise if you're travelling the whole country: the north has warmed up, the central coast is dry and sunny, and the south is hot but manageable before the monsoon arrives in May. For a north-to-south itinerary, start in Hanoi in early March and end in Ho Chi Minh City by late April.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit all of Vietnam?

March or April — the north has warmed up, the central coast is dry and the south is hot but pre-monsoon. No single month is perfect everywhere, but these two months offer the best compromise.

When is typhoon season in Vietnam?

Typhoon season runs from August to November, with September and October being the peak months. The central coast (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) is most exposed.

Is it worth visiting Sapa in winter?

Sapa in winter (December–February) is very cold by Vietnamese standards — temperatures near 0°C at night with fog and drizzle. The views are limited. Autumn (September–November) is far better for clear mountain scenery and rice harvests.
