Himachal Pradesh is almost entirely mountainous, and its climate changes with height. Summers are pleasant in hill towns such as Shimla, while the lower valleys and the towns near the plains get hot in May and June. Most of the year's rain falls from June to September with the monsoon, heaviest in July and August, and landslides are a regular hazard; winters are cold, with snow in the higher towns and on the passes.
