Best time to visit Thailand — month-by-month weather guide
Plan your Thailand trip with our detailed month-by-month weather guide. Cool season, hot season, monsoon timing and the best months for beaches, temples and trekking.
Overview
Thailand is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, welcoming over 35 million visitors in a typical year. The country has three distinct seasons — cool dry (November–February), hot dry (March–May) and wet monsoon (June–October) — and choosing the right time to visit can make the difference between a perfect holiday and a soggy one. The good news is that Thailand is a year-round destination if you know which part of the country to target in each month.
November to February — the cool season
This is the peak tourist season and for good reason. The northeast monsoon brings cool, dry air from mainland Asia. Bangkok daytime highs sit around 31–33°C with pleasantly cool mornings. Chiang Mai and the northern hills can drop to 10–15°C at night — cool enough for a light jacket. Rain is rare across most of the country. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is at its best with calm seas and clear skies. This is also the best time for island hopping, temple visits and outdoor trekking.
March to May — the hot season
Temperatures climb sharply from March onward and peak in April, when highs of 38–42°C are common in the central plains and northeast. Humidity is still moderate in March but builds through April and May. Songkran (Thai New Year, 13–15 April) is deliberately timed for the hottest week — the famous water-throwing festival is both a cultural celebration and a practical way to cool down. Beach destinations remain viable but the heat can be exhausting for sightseeing in Bangkok and the temples of Ayutthaya. Avoid outdoor trekking in April unless you handle heat extremely well.
June to October — the monsoon season
The southwest monsoon brings the rainy season to most of Thailand. Rain typically falls in intense afternoon bursts lasting 1–3 hours before skies clear. Mornings are usually dry and sunny. September is the wettest month for Bangkok and the central plains, with flooding risk in low-lying areas. The key insight for travellers: the monsoon affects the two coasts at different times. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is wet from May to October, while the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is driest from January to August and wettest in October–November. So Koh Samui is actually a great monsoon-season escape.
Best months for beaches
Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak): November to April. Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao): January to August, with February to April being the driest. For Hua Hin and the upper Gulf, November to April is best. If you want to combine both coasts, January and February offer the best overlap.
Best months for northern Thailand
Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle are best visited from November to early February when skies are clear and temperatures are cool. The famous Chiang Mai flower festival in February is a highlight. Avoid March and April for northern trekking — this is the burning season when agricultural fires cause heavy haze and poor air quality across the north. November and early December offer the clearest mountain views.
Budget tip
The shoulder months of May–June and October offer significantly lower prices than the November–February peak season. Weather during these months is warm and humid with afternoon showers but perfectly manageable — especially on the Gulf coast islands, which are in their dry season from May to August. Flights and hotels can be 30–50% cheaper than peak season.
