Surfing weather guide for Southeast Asia — swells, seasons and the best breaks

When and where to surf in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. Swell direction, monsoon timing and wave season by destination.

Overview

Southeast Asia offers world-class surfing from Indonesia's legendary Mentawais to the Philippines' Cloud 9 barrel. Unlike Caribbean or European surf which depends on storm swells, tropical surfing is driven by the consistent southern hemisphere swells that march up from the Roaring Forties, plus monsoon wind patterns that determine which coasts are clean and which are blown out.

Indonesia — the surfing capital

Bali: Dry season (April-October) for the south coast breaks — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles. Wet season (November-March) for east coast breaks — Keramas, Sanur Reef. Mentawai Islands: Best May to October when consistent southern swells combine with light offshore winds. G-Land (East Java): Best April to October for long, powerful lefts. Nias: Best May to October. Desert Point (Lombok): Best June to September for one of the world's best left-hand barrels.

Philippines

Siargao (Cloud 9): Best September to November for powerful northeast swells. The annual Siargao Cup surfing competition happens in late September. La Union: Best July to October for the consistent beach breaks. Baler: Works most of the year with various swell directions. Catanduanes (Majestics): Best October to March for open-ocean northeast swells — remote, uncrowded and powerful.

Thailand

Thailand is not a primary surf destination but has developing scenes. Phuket west coast (Kata, Surin, Nai Harn): Monsoon season (May-October) brings rideable swells from the Indian Ocean. Waves are typically 1-2 metres, occasionally larger during storms. The rest of the year is flat. Koh Lanta and Khao Lak also pick up monsoon swell. The Gulf of Thailand coast has very limited surf.

Wind and swell timing

The key to good surf in the tropics is offshore wind — wind blowing from land to sea, which holds up the wave face and creates clean conditions. In Indonesia, the southeast trade winds (dry season) blow offshore on the south-facing coasts, creating perfect conditions from April to October. During the wet season, northwest winds make these same breaks onshore and messy but clean up the east-facing breaks. Understanding this wind reversal is essential for timing your surf trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to surf in Bali? ▾

May to September for the famous south coast breaks (Uluwatu, Padang Padang). Southeast trade winds blow offshore, holding up the waves. November to March for east coast breaks (Keramas).

Is Southeast Asian surfing suitable for beginners? ▾

Yes — Bali (Kuta Beach, Canggu), Koh Lanta (Thailand) and La Union (Philippines) all have gentle beach breaks ideal for learning. Avoid reef breaks like Uluwatu and Cloud 9 until you have intermediate skills.
