Best weather for Bagan temples — balloon flights, sunsets and seasonal timing
Bagan has the widest temperature range in Myanmar. When to visit for balloon flights, temple photography and comfortable exploration.
Overview
Bagan sits in Myanmar's central dry zone and has a remarkably different climate from Yangon or the coast. It receives only about 600 mm of rain per year — less than Madrid — which is one reason its 11th-century temples have survived so well. But this also means extreme heat: April temperatures regularly exceed 42°C, making the wrong timing genuinely dangerous.
Best months (November-February)
The cool dry season is overwhelmingly the best time. November and December offer warm days (28-32°C), cool mornings (15-18°C), clear skies and the best conditions for hot air balloon flights over the temples. January is the coolest month — overnight temperatures can drop to 12°C, which means comfortable temple cycling during the day and atmospheric mist at dawn. February remains excellent but starts warming up.
Balloon flights
Hot air balloon flights over Bagan operate from late October to mid-March only (the rest of the year is too hot or too rainy). Flights depart at dawn (5:30-6:00 AM) and last about 45 minutes, floating over thousands of temples in the golden morning light. Book well ahead — there are only a few operators with limited daily capacity. Cost: approximately $300-400 per person.
Temple photography
Sunrise and sunset are the prime photography times at Bagan. The best sunrise viewpoint temples have changed over the years as Myanmar authorities have restricted climbing on some structures for conservation. As of 2024, the viewing mounds and designated platforms are the legal options. A 4:30 AM wake-up is necessary in the cool season to reach your viewpoint before dawn. Afternoon golden hour (4-6 PM) is equally spectacular with fewer crowds.
Avoid April
April in Bagan is punishingly hot — 42-44°C with merciless sun. Even locals stay indoors from 10 AM to 4 PM. If you must visit, restrict temple visits to the first and last hour of daylight and carry a minimum of 3 litres of water. The Thingyan water festival (mid-April) is celebrated here but with less intensity than in Mandalay or Yangon.

Late October to mid-March. The most popular months are November and December. Book at least 2-3 months in advance during peak season.
Is Bagan worth visiting during monsoon? ▾
The wet season (June-September) brings modest rain (much less than Yangon), green landscapes and virtually no tourists. Temple visits are comfortable temperature-wise (30-34°C). But balloon flights are unavailable and some dirt tracks between temples may be muddy.
