Island hopping weather guide — when to visit 30 Southeast Asian islands

The best months for every major island destination from Bali to Boracay, Phu Quoc to Perhentian. Organized by optimal weather window.

Overview

Southeast Asia has thousands of islands, each with its own microclimate shaped by monsoon direction, ocean currents and mountain geography. The single most important thing to understand is that different coasts face different monsoons — so the "best time" depends entirely on which side of the land mass the island sits. This guide organizes the 30 most popular islands by their optimal weather windows.

November to April (dry)

These islands are best visited during the northeast monsoon dry season: Thailand Andaman Coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lipe, Krabi, Khao Lak — peak Dec-Mar), Bali & Lombok (dry season Apr-Oct, but also good Nov-Mar), Philippines West Coast (Boracay, Palawan/El Nido, Coron — Nov-May), Vietnam South (Phu Quoc — Nov-Mar), Cambodia (Koh Rong — Nov-May).

May to October (dry)

These islands have their best weather during the southwest monsoon period: Thailand Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao — best Mar-Sep), Malaysia East Coast (Perhentian, Redang, Tioman, Langkawi — Apr-Oct), Indonesia East (Komodo, Flores, Raja Ampat — Oct-Apr overlaps, diving best Apr-Sep).

Year-round destinations

Some islands are diveable and beach-worthy most of the year: Singapore's Sentosa (consistent year-round), Malaysia's Sipadan (all year, permits required), Indonesia's Bunaken (all year, best Mar-Oct), Philippines' Cebu/Malapascua (year-round diving). Even "year-round" islands have optimal months — check the specific forecast.

Cross-monsoon itinerary trick

The smartest island-hopping strategy exploits the opposite monsoon coasts. Example itinerary for July-August: Start at Koh Samui (Gulf of Thailand, dry) → fly to Bali (dry season) → boat to Komodo (peak dry, manta season) → fly to Sipadan (year-round). This gives you consistently dry weather across 4 weeks by staying on the "right" side of the monsoon at each stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best island for weather year-round?

Bali comes closest — it has a long dry season (April-October) and even the wet season (November-March) has mostly afternoon rain with sunny mornings. But no island is perfect 365 days a year.

When do Perhentian and Tioman islands close?

Most resorts on Perhentian, Redang and Tioman close from November to February/March due to the northeast monsoon bringing rough seas and heavy rain. Ferry services are suspended. A few budget places stay open but diving is not recommended.
