Best time to visit Myanmar — Bagan, Inle Lake and monsoon guide
Myanmar has dramatic seasonal variation from the extreme heat of Bagan to the cool nights of Inle Lake. Our guide covers the best months for each region.
Overview
Myanmar has one of the most variable climates in mainland Southeast Asia. The central dry zone around Bagan can reach 43°C in April, while Inle Lake at 880 metres elevation sees cold mornings in January. The cool dry season (November-February) is overwhelmingly the best time to visit, with comfortable temperatures and virtually no rain across the entire country.
November to February
Peak season with good reason. Bagan is warm but comfortable (25-32°C), Inle Lake is cool and atmospheric with morning mist on the water, and Yangon is pleasant with low humidity. Balloon flights over Bagan's temples operate from October to March. This is the busiest tourist period — book accommodation well ahead for Bagan and Inle.
March to May
Extreme heat makes central Myanmar (Bagan, Mandalay) very challenging. April temperatures in Bagan routinely exceed 40°C. The Thingyan water festival (mid-April) is spectacular but logistically chaotic. Hill stations like Kalaw and Pyin Oo Lwin offer cooler retreats. May sees the first monsoon rains bringing relief.
June to October
The monsoon season. Yangon and the coast receive torrential rain. The central dry zone gets significantly less (Bagan sees modest rain). Inle Lake fills up and the surrounding fields are at their greenest. Tourism drops dramatically, bringing lower prices. Trekking between Kalaw and Inle Lake is beautiful but muddy.
