Best time to visit Laos — Luang Prabang, Vientiane and the Mekong
Laos has three seasons and a haze problem in spring. Our guide covers the best months for Luang Prabang, tubing in Vang Vieng, and avoiding the burning season.
Overview
Laos is landlocked and mountainous, giving it wider temperature swings than its coastal neighbours. The cool dry season (November-February) is the clear winner for visitors — comfortable temperatures, clear skies and the Mekong at manageable levels. The burning season in March-April produces serious haze that can ruin northern Laos trips.
November to February
The best months. Luang Prabang is beautiful with cool mornings (12-15°C), warm afternoons (28°C) and clear mountain views. The morning alms-giving ceremony is most atmospheric in the cool morning light. Vang Vieng is perfect for kayaking and tubing. The That Luang Festival in November is Laos's most important celebration.
March to April — avoid for northern Laos
The burning season is the dirty secret of northern Laos. Slash-and-burn agriculture produces thick haze that blankets Luang Prabang, often worse than Bangkok or Chiang Mai. AQI readings regularly exceed 200 (very unhealthy). Photography is disappointing and health risks are real. Visit the south (4000 Islands, Bolaven Plateau) instead if you must travel in these months.
May to October
The wet season. Rain is heaviest in August and September. The countryside is at its most lush. Roads in remote areas can become impassable. The Mekong swells dramatically — the Luang Prabang waterfront is often partially flooded. Budget travellers appreciate monsoon-season discounts of 30-40%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Luang Prabang worth visiting in the haze season? ▾
No — March and April haze in Luang Prabang is genuinely bad. AQI often exceeds 200. Postpone to November-February if possible.
When is the best time for the Bolaven Plateau? ▾
November to February for the driest weather and best waterfall conditions. The plateau is cool year-round because of its 1,000-1,350 metre elevation.
