Monsoon withdrawal is a gradual process that takes weeks to cross the entire region. In mainland Southeast Asia, the monsoon typically begins retreating from the north (Myanmar, northern Laos) in late September, reaching the southern coasts by November. The retreat is often more erratic than the onset and can produce intense bursts of rainfall as the monsoon retreats. The post-monsoon period (October-November) is actually the wettest time on the Gulf of Thailand and Vietnam central coast.
