The IMD defines a heatwave when temperatures exceed 40°C in the plains or when temperatures are 4.5–6.4°C above normal. Severe heatwaves require temperatures above 47°C or 6.5°C+ above normal. India experiences devastating heatwaves in May–June, particularly in Rajasthan, Gujarat and the central plains. In 2023, parts of India reached 49°C.
