Brunei Darussalam is a tiny sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo, surrounded on three sides by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Its climate is tropical rainforest — warm, humid and wet year-round with no real dry season. The country lies about 4–5 degrees north of the equator, which puts it firmly in the stable equatorial climate zone shared with neighbouring Sabah and Sarawak.

Climate

Brunei has a classic equatorial climate with minimal seasonal variation. Temperatures are remarkably consistent: daytime highs are 31–33°C year-round and nighttime lows are 22–24°C. Humidity is consistently above 80%. There is no month without significant rainfall — annual totals average around 2,700 mm on the coast and over 4,000 mm in the interior.

Two monsoon systems affect Brunei, similar to the rest of northern Borneo. The northeast monsoon (November–March) brings the wettest months, with December and January typically seeing the most rain. The southwest monsoon (June–September) brings slightly less rainfall and a marginally drier transition period. Even the "drier" months still average over 150 mm of rain.

Brunei is essentially outside the typhoon belt. Tropical cyclones almost never reach this close to the equator. What Brunei does experience is intense monsoon rainfall and occasional flash flooding from convective storms. The country's small size and flat coastal terrain mean that heavy rain can quickly overwhelm drainage.

Seasons

Northeast monsoon (November – March)

The wettest period of the year. Heavy rain is frequent, often in the form of long thunderstorms that can last for hours. Flooding in Bandar Seri Begawan and coastal districts is a regular concern. December and January are typically the wettest months.

First inter-monsoon (April – May)

Transition period with lighter winds and slightly less rainfall. Temperatures creep up slightly — April is often the warmest month — but the difference is only about a degree compared to the monsoon months. Skies tend to clear more often.

Southwest monsoon (June – September)

The relatively drier period. Rainfall is still frequent but less concentrated than during the northeast monsoon. Mornings are typically clear with afternoon thunderstorms developing. This is the best time of year for outdoor tourism and rainforest trekking.

Second inter-monsoon (October)

A short transition period before the northeast monsoon returns. Rainfall increases through the month. Temperatures remain steady.

Extreme weather events

Brunei is not prone to the extreme weather events that affect the Philippines or Vietnam. Its main weather-related risks are flash flooding during peak monsoon rainfall and occasional haze from forest fires in neighbouring Sarawak and Kalimantan. During the 2015 El Niño, haze from Indonesian peat fires briefly pushed air quality into unhealthy ranges. Overall, Brunei has one of the most benign weather profiles in Southeast Asia.

Regional variation

Coastal Brunei (Bandar Seri Begawan, Muara, Tutong) has slightly lower rainfall and more stable weather than the interior.

The interior around Temburong and Ulu-Belait is significantly wetter, receiving over 4,000 mm of rain per year on forested slopes.

The country has no significant elevation differences — Brunei's highest point is Bukit Pagon at 1,850 metres, which is cooler than the coast but still tropical.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Brunei is February through October, avoiding the peak northeast monsoon (November–January). March, April and July are typically the driest and sunniest months, making them ideal for visiting the Ulu Temburong rainforest or taking a cruise through the water villages of Bandar Seri Begawan. That said, rain is possible in any month and shouldn't be a deterrent — it usually comes in short intense bursts followed by clear skies.
