Typhoon season in Southeast Asia — what to know and how to prepare

When and where typhoons hit in Southeast Asia. Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan and southern China are most affected. How to track storms and stay safe during typhoon season.

What is a typhoon?

A typhoon is the regional name for a tropical cyclone in the western Pacific Ocean — the same phenomenon called a "hurricane" in the Atlantic and "cyclone" in the Indian Ocean. Typhoons form over warm tropical waters (sea surface temperatures above 26.5°C) and are fuelled by the release of latent heat from condensing moisture. The western Pacific is the most active tropical cyclone basin in the world, producing an average of 26 named storms per year.

When is typhoon season?

The official typhoon season in the western Pacific runs from June to November, but storms can form in any month. Activity typically peaks in August and September. In the Bay of Bengal (affecting Myanmar and the Andaman coast), cyclone season has two peaks: pre-monsoon (April–May) and post-monsoon (October–November). The strongest and most destructive storms tend to form in the October–November period, when sea surface temperatures are at their warmest after months of summer heating.

Which countries are most affected?

The Philippines is by far the most typhoon-exposed country in Southeast Asia, averaging 20 tropical cyclones per year entering its area of responsibility, with 8–10 making landfall. Vietnam is second, particularly the central coast from Hue to Nha Trang, which sees 6–10 named storms per year. Thailand is largely shielded by the Indochinese peninsula but occasionally catches the remnants of storms that cross Vietnam. Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are essentially outside the typhoon belt because of their proximity to the equator (the Coriolis force is too weak to sustain cyclones below about 5° latitude).

Notable recent typhoons

Supertyphoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in November 2013 was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded at landfall, devastating Tacloban in the Philippines and killing over 6,000 people. Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) in September 2018 caused widespread destruction across the Philippines and Hong Kong. Typhoon Rai (Odette) in December 2021 was the strongest December typhoon to hit the Philippines in decades. Cyclone Nargis in May 2008 killed over 138,000 people in Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta — a reminder that the Bay of Bengal also produces catastrophic systems.

How to stay safe

Monitor weather agencies: PAGASA (Philippines), NCHMF (Vietnam), TMD (Thailand), JMA (Japan — tracks all western Pacific typhoons). Do not ignore evacuation orders. Stock water, non-perishable food and a fully charged phone. If caught in a typhoon: stay indoors, away from windows, on the ground floor if possible. After the storm: beware of flooded roads, downed power lines and contaminated water. Travel insurance that covers typhoon disruption is essential for any Southeast Asia trip during June–November.

Impact on travel planning

If you are planning a trip to the Philippines or central Vietnam between August and November, build flexibility into your itinerary. Typhoons can cause flight cancellations, island closures and road disruptions for days. Consider travel insurance with "cancel for any reason" coverage. The shoulder months of June–July and late November offer lower typhoon risk while still being within the warm season. For the Philippines, December to April is the safest window; for central Vietnam, February to May.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can typhoons reach Thailand?

Rarely directly — Thailand is shielded by Vietnam and the Indochinese peninsula. However, the remnants of typhoons that cross Vietnam can bring heavy rain to northeast Thailand and occasionally to the Gulf coast.

Are Bali and Indonesia affected by typhoons?

No — Indonesia sits on or near the equator, where the Coriolis force is too weak to sustain tropical cyclones. Typhoons are essentially a non-issue for Bali, Java and most of Indonesia.

What is the difference between a typhoon and a tropical storm?

Both are tropical cyclones. The distinction is wind speed: a tropical storm has sustained winds of 63–118 km/h; a typhoon has sustained winds above 119 km/h. A "super typhoon" exceeds 240 km/h.
