Global sea level has risen about 20 cm since 1900 and is currently rising at 3.6 mm per year (accelerating). Southeast Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions: Jakarta is sinking and faces submersion risk, Bangkok is only 1.5 metres above sea level, the Mekong Delta could lose 40% of its area by 2100, and Pacific island nations face existential threats. Indonesia is moving its capital partly due to sea level and subsidence concerns.
