What is Wind Chill?

Wind chill quantifies how much colder air feels when wind is blowing, compared to the same air temperature in calm conditions. It is the cold-weather counterpart to the heat index (which is for hot, humid weather).

The principle: your body continuously emits heat. In still air, a thin “boundary layer” of warmed air builds up just above your skin, slowing further heat loss. When wind blows, it strips away this boundary layer, exposing your skin to fresh cold air repeatedly. Your body loses heat much faster — and you feel colder even though the actual air temperature hasn’t changed.

The standard formula (North American 2001 update) — when air temperature ≤ 10°C and wind speed ≥ 5 km/h:

WCT = 13.12 + 0.6215×T − 11.37×V^0.16 + 0.3965×T×V^0.16

Where:

Wind chill ranges below 5°C air temperature; above that, evaporative cooling (heat index) becomes more relevant than convective cooling.
