What is Volcanic Ash?

Indonesia and the Philippines sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire and have the most active volcanoes in Southeast Asia. Volcanic ash clouds are a significant aviation hazard — they can damage jet engines and reduce visibility. Major eruptions like Mount Pinatubo (1991, Philippines) and Mount Agung (2017-2018, Bali) caused widespread flight disruptions. Health effects include eye irritation, respiratory problems and contaminated water supplies. Volcanic eruptions also inject aerosols that temporarily cool the global climate.
