What is Mudslide (Lahar/Debris Flow)?

Lahars (volcanic mudflows) are a specific danger near active volcanoes in Indonesia and the Philippines. They can be triggered by heavy rain on volcanic ash deposits even without an eruption. Non-volcanic debris flows occur throughout the region on deforested hillsides during peak monsoon. Velocities can exceed 50 km/h, making them extremely dangerous because they move faster than people can run.
