What is a Dust Storm?

A dust storm is a meteorological event where strong winds lift large quantities of dust and sand into the air, reducing horizontal visibility and degrading air quality. The WMO defines a “dust storm” when visibility drops below 1 km due to airborne dust, and a “severe dust storm” when visibility drops below 200 m.

  1. Seek immediate shelter — building, vehicle, even a low-lying area
  2. Cover face — wet cloth or mask (N95 ideal)
