Cup anemometers use three or four cups mounted on horizontal arms that spin in the wind. Ultrasonic anemometers use sound pulses to measure wind speed and direction with no moving parts. The WMO standard placement is 10 metres above ground level on open flat terrain. Airport weather stations use anemometers to measure crosswinds critical for safe landings.
